Failures cause costly and bothersome disturbances to production processes. By predicting failures it is possible to employ preventative actions to avoid failures and minimise their consequences. Condition-based maintenance or predictive maintenance involves monitoring of the condition of machines and ongoing determination of the likelihood of any problems. By implementing computerised information management systems with the condition-based maintenance or predictive maintenance strategy, it possible to decrease costs generated by failures and repairs, reduce downtime periods, and at the same time prolong the operation of machines and increase safety.
